Angular contact ball bearings (Art) are available in single-row, double-row, and matched pair configurations. Each type is designed for high-speed performance and accuracy and can handle axial and radial loads. In addition to these features, angular contact ball bearings are durable and easy to maintain. Angular contact ball bearings are shaped like a cylinder with radial grooves and are used to transmit axial and radial loads. They are better suited for higher axial forces than deep groove ball bearings. They are available as single-row and double-row designs and come with axial clearances and preloads. They also have upper and lower shoulder designs, which improve their load-carrying capacity. Angular contact ball bearings have a contact angle of 15 to 25 degrees, while tapered roller bearings only have a contact angle of 8 degrees. Because angular contact ball bearings are designed for radial and axial loads, they can operate at higher speeds than tapered roller bearings. Moreover, the cages of angular contact ball bearings have a raised shoulder on the outer ring, allowing them to spin at higher speeds and carry higher loads.

The inner and outer ring raceways of this type are displaced relative to each other, and the bearings can absorb axial and radial forces simultaneously. As such, they are perfect for both high-precision and high-speed applications. Angular Contact Ball Bearings are also frequently used in heavy-duty centrifugal pump designs. The contact angle between the inner and outer components is critical to determining the amount of axial and radial loads the bearings can support. For example, an API 610-compliant pump design typically requires a contact angle of 40deg or more. For double-row bearings, this contact angle is closer to 25 degrees. Angular Contact Ball Bearings are also used for duplex applications. Single-row Timken angular contact ball bearings can accommodate high axial loads in one direction, but double-row angular contact ball bearings can accommodate thrust in both directions. The geometry of angular contact ball bearing raceways and shoulders determines the ball contact angle. Some angular contact ball bearings are available with special lubricants and cage materials, which increase their dimensional stability.
